What voters need to know
State law (NDCC 16.1-01-03) lets each county or city set its polls to open between 7 and 9 a.m. and to close at 7 p.m. or as late as 9 p.m. local time, but the Secretary of State's official 2026 general-election polling-place list shows every polling place closing at 7:00 p.m. local time (openings vary from 7 to 9 a.m.). Voters standing in line when the polls close must be allowed to vote. Absentee and mail ballots must be received by the close of polls on Election Day (a receipt deadline, not a postmark deadline) and are not accepted at polling places.
