* Early because the 1st is a weekend or federal holiday. VA doesn't publish a dated calendar; these dates apply its payment rule to the federal holiday calendar.

How the dates are set

VA disability compensation, Veterans Pension, and survivors benefits (DIC and survivors pension) are paid monthly in arrears: after the first payment on a new award (sent within about 15 days), payments are made at the beginning of each month for the prior month, i.e. due on the 1st. By law (38 U.S.C. 5120(e)), when the 1st falls on a Saturday or Sunday VA certifies payment for delivery on the preceding Friday, and when the 1st is a legal public holiday, on the preceding weekday other than Saturday - so the payment can land in the same month it covers (e.g. the payment for October 2026, due Sunday, November 1, is made Friday, October 30, 2026; the payment for December 2026, due Friday, January 1, 2027, is made Thursday, December 31, 2026).
